Installation Guide

CAUTION

So far, all versions of the Garmin Map Pilot software are faulty. POIs are currently not displayed correctly. The errors can only be remedied by an update from Mercedes or Garmin. If you like, you can download and try our speed camera database. However, please do not expect a perfect solution. At your own risk, (as refunds are not possible after download), since the errors are not based in our files. You can see the known software versions and errors at the end of this page.

We look forward to helping you as a beta tester and sharing your experience with us; especially if we don't know a software version yet. We collect them for all users at the bottom of this page. Please send an email to support@scdb.info with brief feedback and the following information about your device (ideally with photos):
Device name
Software version
Installed maps
SD card version

1 Notes

The Mercedes Garmin Map Pilot is available in two different hardware variants: NTG5Star1 and NTG5E.
There are different software versions for each hardware.

To find these information, you should follow this menu path:
Settings > System > System information > Device information

Please refer to Chapter 6 Release Notes & Known Issues !!!

2 Install the POI Loader software

  1. Before proceeding with the installation, please ensure that you have the Garmin POI Loader software installed on your computer. You can download it free of charge from the Garmin Support website:

    Download POI Loader for Windows

  2. Download POI Loader for Mac

3 Download speed camera data

  1. Go to our product page for Mercedes Garmin Map Pilot.
We offer only data of fixed speed cameras.
    Press button Download.

  2. Make your decision on the download page.
Use preselection on the left or country list on the right.
Hold down the CTRL key to select several countries.

  3. There are four options in step 2.
Determine the number of files in which the speed camera database should be output (not: which symbols should be displayed in your navigation device).
Note: Icon files are not included in the download. Because Mercedes devices can not import POI icon files.

Split into all categories will download the database as many files for different camera types.
Split into speed cameras and redlights will download the database as two files for speed cameras and redlights.
All safety cameras in one category will download the database as only one file (POI category).
All safety cameras in one category (another icon) Same file as option before.

Depending on the selected option, the download contains more or fewer files. However, the number of speed cameras is the same for each option.

  4. Press button Download Now.
Save the file mercedes-garmin-map-pilot.zip in a folder of your choice on your hard drive.

Note: In most cases, the file is saved directly to your computer's download folder.
Sometimes you can choose the location yourself (this depends on your personal browser settings).

  5. Unzip the file mercedes-garmin-map-pilot.zip to a target folder of your choice on your computer (we would suggest Desktop as it’s easy to find).
For example, users with a Windows PC can right-click the ZIP file and select the Extract All... function.
Mac users double-click the ZIP file to unzip it.

4 Install speed camera data

  1. Start the POI Loader software installed at the beginning and follow the instructions on the screen.

Select the desktop as the location for the speed camera file.

  2. Click on Browse.
Select the folder in which the unzipped speed camera files are located.

Enter a file name for the new POI file (e.g. SCDB_EUROPE).

Select the units for distance and speed (e.g. meters and km/h).

Select the Manual mode (not: Express mode).
We have indications that only such a warning message appears at the top of the screen (red bar with distance to the speed camera).

See also Chapter 6 Release Notes & Known Issues.

    Click on Next.

  3. The data is read in and the POI file is created.

POI Loader displays the number of installed POIs. The number varies depending on the country selection and the day of the download.

You will now find the new POI file in the location you have chosen (e.g. desktop).

  4. Insert the Garmin Map Pilot's SD card into your computer's card reader.

  5. Copy or move the SCDB_EUROPE.gpi file to the POI folder on the SD card.

  6. Safely remove the SD card from the computer.

5 Activate the display in the navigation system

  1. Insert the SD card into the navigation device, then switch on the ignition and wait until the navigation software has started.

  2. In most cases, the display should already be activated automatically.
To be on the safe side, check the menu here: Settings > Map Display > Points of Interest (ON).

Note: The view of the settings menu can vary in different software versions.

  3. Now it's time to take a real test drive.
Visual and acoustic warning appears while driving.
Note: It will not work if you are only simulating a route.

The appearance of the display can vary in the different software versions.

Note: Many versions of Garmin software still have some bugs. In some versions, for example, the flash symbol freezes on the left edge. You can only solve this error by briefly removing the SD card. Or the warnings are displayed with Asian characters. Further errors and possible solutions can be found in the next chapter.
